Forward & Chapters 1 & 2 - Just A Thought

After reading the forward and first two chapters of Jo Boalers’ Experiencing School Mathematics the inward debate I always feel when I am teaching arose in me again.  The traditional instruction versus progressive approach is an ongoing debate in society and one in which I feel internally.  I try to be as innovative as possible in my classroom, aiming to incorporate my students’ interests and talents into my lessons; however, with time and curriculum restraints that task can be difficult.  I do feel project based instruction, like Boaler documented at Phoenix Park, is a better approach to teaching mathematics and teaching in general.  However, this approach takes time to develop and an environment that is friendly to it.  With the demands we face every day as teachers striving to do this can many time be impossible.
